Days of Democracy. Photographs by Barbara Klemm
Days of Democracy. Photographs by Barbara Klemm
Exhibition
Protest movements and upheavals: Barbara Klemm's photographs create a mosaic of the zeitgeist. They capture great moments of political decisions as well as reverberating social moods. Unparalleled, they leave a
mark on our visual memory of the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. For 40 years, the photographer worked for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Her black-and-white photographs went far beyond the documentary. The immediacy of the snapshots is transformed into thoughtful pictorial compositions that, from today's perspective, seem to foreshadow historical developments. The exhibition at Villa 102 seeks out large and small democratic processes in Barbara Klemm's work. The selection of images shows key moments of German reunification and social protest movements, but also asks about social and political participation in the postwar decades. These are the days of democracy.
Curated by Daniela Leykam and the KfW Stiftung in collaboration with Barbara Klemm.

About the Project
Precisely against the backdrop of the great social upheavals of the present, the view of the postwar period is changing. Questions are being raised about the stability, but also the cumbersome nature of our democracy. The view of history is changing and there are calls for reorganisation. On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Frankfurt National Assembly in the Paulskirche, the project "Tage der Demokratie" (Days of Democracy) in the historic Villa 102 wants to invite people to think further.
A project of KfW Stiftung kindly supported by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Developed in collaboration with the Paulskirche Network.
