In 2026, the KfW Stiftung in collaboration with the Academy of Arts, Berlin is organising a programme of discussions and artistic events as part of the exhibition Metaxy: Between Destruction and Reconstruction. This interdisciplinary exhibition and events project examines how destruction is addressed in conflict zones worldwide and explores the complex process of reconstruction. At its heart lies the question: How do societies deal with destruction and loss – and how do they shape a future in the light of the past?

Metaxy : Between
Destruction and Reconstruction

10.09. – 06.12.2026
Opening 09.09.2026
Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg, Berlin

Wars, armed conflicts and ecological catastrophes are destroying cities and living environments across the globe. Reconstruction is an urgent task. Millions of people need shelter, space and security. Yet reconstruction is all too often framed as a technical undertaking, a rapid return to order, a supposed “year zero” or an opportunity for investment and innovation. In the process, a crucial question risks being overlooked: Who decides how rebuilding takes shape, and in whose interests?

Metaxy : Between begins precisely at this point. The exhibition as well as the accompanying events and education programme focus on the interval between destruction and reconstruction, the uncertain moment when it remains unresolved how societies confront loss, guilt and memory. Before rebuilding begins, fundamental questions must be addressed: Who is allowed to return? Who owns the land? Which histories are told? When such questions are suppressed, violence does not end; it persists in other forms through exclusion, erasure and new power relations.

For the Akademie der Künste, the exhibition is linked to a self-examination of its location in the Hansaviertel as a historic site of post-1945 reconstruction. At the same time, it opens up a global perspective featuring artists and spatial practitioners who develop their work from the liminal states caused by war, conflict and ecological disasters.

The three thematic areas that structure the exhibition—Houses, Floors, Times—are reflected in the discursive and performative programme of events, which features symposia on these topics. To this end, a venue will be set up in the exhibition halls to host artist talks, film screenings, performances and staged readings. Part of the curatorial dramaturgy consists of performative-musical miniatures conceived as “interludes,” which take place both at the event venue and throughout the exhibition halls. They intervene in ongoing situations, interrupt them, shift perspectives and connect different levels of the exhibition with one another. An extensive educational programme accompanies the project.

Participating artists and spatial pracititioners: Hala Alnaji, Archigrest, Marina Tabassum Architects, Maja Bajević, Tiffany Chung, Co-Haty, Paul Hübner, Salma Samar Damluji, Nir Evron, Forensis, Open Group, Ola Hassanain, Omer Krieger, Kioomars Musayyebi, Arinjoy Sen, Nurit Stark, Syrbanism, topoScape, Immanuel Schumacher, Feda Wardak, Eyal Weizman, Ines Weizman, Julita Wójcik, Lebbeus Woods, among others

The Event Programme

As part of the exhibition, the Metaxy : Between programme transforms the ‘in-between’ into a space for artistic encounter, exchange and social reflection. Through readings, film screenings, discussions and musical performances, international guests, participating artists, Academy members and Young Academy fellows engage in a dialogue with the exhibition.

The Akademie der Künste is a legal entity under public law in the Federal Republic of Germany serving diverse functions and objectives. It supports the arts and represents related causes in society, maintains and preserves cultural heritage and advises the federal government in matters of art and culture.

With its six Sections and impressive Archives, the Akademie is, above all, a location where artists and those interested in art and culture can meet, providing places to consider and debate public issues and concerns, and actively influence cultural and social trends.

Not only do works of art develop their effect and impact in the public arena, but artists themselves can make direct intervention one of their aims – and this basic principle, informed by Enlightenment thought, shapes all of the Akademie’s other activities – exhibitions, concerts, readings, screenings, publications, and so on. These are based on the firm belief that freedom of the arts is not a luxury but an unerring benchmark of the liberality of the society that facilitates it.

The Akademie’s event programme presents contemporary artistic approaches to the public and is dedicated to safeguarding cultural heritage. At its two permanent locations in the centre of Berlin – Pariser Platz in the Berlin-Mitte district and the Hanseatenweg venue in Tiergarten – the Akademie shows exhibitions, organises concerts, debates, readings, award ceremonies, as well as film, theatre, and dance performances.

The Akademie der Künste is an international community of artists with 411 current members.
